Three numbers decide which RIGI you need, and they trade against each other. Pixel pitch sets how finely the camera resolves. Array size sets how many pixels there are. Their product is the active area — the physical size of the sensor, and the first thing to check, because a beam larger than the active area needs relay optics before it needs a better camera.

Resolution is not usually the limit. At 1 THz the wavelength is 300 µm; at 18 THz it is 16.7 µm. Every pitch in the series is smaller than the wavelength across most of the band, so the image is diffraction-limited rather than pixel-limited. Choosing a finer pitch buys sampling of the diffraction spot, not extra detail beyond it.

For a tightly focused beam and the smallest possible instrument, the S series is the right family — the S1 is coin-sized and OEM-only. For direct imaging of a large beam without optics, the coarse-pitch S4n and S5n give the largest sensors in the range. For the highest pixel count, the L and XL series carry megapixel arrays, with the XL2n at the finest 12 µm pitch. The M series sits between the two, and is the usual choice for general laboratory imaging.

Every camera is USB-powered and USB 3.0 read out, so there is no frame grabber, no external supply and no cooling. That is what makes the series portable enough to mount on the PCA Scanner or take into the field.

  • ▸ Fitted with an IR-blocking THz filter.
  • ▸ Objective lenses are specified separately — see THz Objective Lens for the imaging options that pair with each series.
  • ▸ Application example: a simple THz imaging setup built from a Toptica PCA and a RIGI camera.
  • ▸ Exclusive distributor for Japanese customers: フジトク株式会社 (Fujitok Co., Ltd.).

Active area is array size × pixel pitch. It is the figure that decides whether a beam fits on the sensor without relay optics.
